Sejumlah negara Arab akhir-akhir ini mengalami distabilitas sosial politik. Setelah Irak diguncang protes dan demonstrasi besar-besaran selama dalam dua pekan terakhir, kini terjadi di Libanon.
Dilaorkan, sekitar kantor Perdana Menteri Lebanon di pusat kota Beirut sedang menyaksikan pertemuan ribuan demonstran yang memprotes situasi ekonomi sejak Kamis lalu dan menuntut kepergian semua simbol rezim. Para aktivis terlihat memotong jalan-jalan utama menuju Beirut seperti dilansir Aljazeera.net (19/10/2019).
Sementara itu, di luar, puluhan warga Lebanon berdemonstrasi di depan kedutaan besar negara mereka di Washington, DC, sebagai bentuk aksi solidaritas dengan demonstrasi yang terjadi di kota-kota Lebanon.
Para demonstran meneriakkan slogan-slogan yang mengecam pemerintah dan parlemen di negara itu, dan menyatakan dukungan untuk gerakan rakyat Lebanon dan tuntutannya untuk memerangi korupsi, mereformasi kondisi ekonomi dan sosial, serta meningkatkan pelayanan keperluan dasar publik.
Sejak Kamis malam waktu setempat, Lebanon menyaksikan demonstrasi di beberapa titik di Beirut dan kota-kota lain, setelah pemerintah mengumumkan dimasukkannya pajak baru dalam anggaran tahun depan untuk mencapai sektor telekomunikasi gratis melalui ponsel dan lainnya, dalam rangka memberikan pendapatan baru kepada kas negara.
