TUNIS: Mantan Presiden Tunisia Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali yang berkuasa selama 23 tahun ( 1987-2011) meninggal dunia pada usia 83 tahun, Kamis, (19/9/2019) di Arab Saudi seperti diberitakan Arabnews.com.
Menurut berita tersebut, pengacara Ben Ali, Mounir Ben Salha, mengkonfirmasi kabar meninggalnya Presiden kedua Tunisia itu, mengutip anggota keluarga dan dokter Ben Ali.
Ben Ali, mengasingkan diri ke Saudi Arabia setelah pemeritahannya digulingkan lewat demonstrasi massa yang dikenal dengan “Revolusi Jasmine” 2011. Ben Ali meninggalkan Tunisia pada 14 Januari 2011 menuju Arab Saudi.
Pada pertengahan 2012, Ben Ali dijatuhi hukuman seumur hidup karena perannya dalam kematian banyak demonstran selama pemberontakan yang kemudian menggulingkannya.

Dia menjanjikan reformasi, demokrasi, hak-hak perempuan dan pendidikan. Tetapi dia gagal memberikan masyarakat yang lebih bebas dan terbuka.
Kontrol ketatnya terhadap masyarakat didukung oleh jaringan mata-mata yang luas, informan dan polisi rahasia yang membuat Ben Ali tetap langggeng berkuasa. Tetapi pada akhirnya kemarahan rakyat terhadap kontrol obsesif terbukti menjadi penyebab kehancurannya, tulis Hamilton seprti dilansir BBC.com, 19/9/19. (fath)
