Hirameda-Perdana Menteri Inggris, Theresa May menyatakan akan mengundurkan diri sebagai Ketua Partai Konservatif pada 7 Juni mendatang setelah mendapat tekanan kuat dari partainya sendiri. Ia menetapkan tanggal tersebut sebagai akhir kepemimpinannya di partai Konservatif, setelah masa jabatan tiga tahun yang dilaluinya mengalami gejolak.
Berbicara di Downing Street, 23/5/2019, PM May mengatakan adalah “kehormatan hidupku” untuk melayani sebagai Perdana Menteri wanita kedua di Inggris. Dengan suaranya yang pecah, dia berkata bahwa dia akan pergi “tanpa niat buruk, tetapi dengan rasa terima kasih yang luar biasa dan abadi untuk memiliki kesempatan untuk melayani negara yang saya cintai”. Selama kurang lebih tiga tahun menjabat Perdana Menteri menggantikan PM David Cameron yang juga mengundurkan diri pada tahun 2016 terkait referendum keluarnya Inggris dari Uni Eropa (Brexit).
Saat menyampaikan keputusannya itu, Theresa May sembari menangis menahan kesedihan. Dia mengakui: “Ini akan selalu tetap merupakan masalah penyesalan yang mendalam bagi saya bahwa saya belum dapat memberikan penyelesaian Brexit.”/Fath
