Hiramedia : Juru bicara Departemen Pertahanan AS (Pentagon) John Kirby mengumumkan bahwa negaranya telah menghentikan dukungan untuk operasi militer di Yaman, setelah Presiden AS Joe Biden mengeluarkan arahan untuk bekerja guna mengakhiri perang di sana.
“Berdasarkan perintah Presiden kemarin, apa yang diberikan Kementerian Pertahanan dalam hal dukungan non-tempur terbatas untuk operasi koalisi, termasuk intelijen dan beberapa konsultasi, semuanya telah dihentikan,” kata Kirby dalam jumpa pers, Jumat (5/2/2021) dilansir aljazeera.net.
“Tapi Arab Saudi tetap menjadi mitra dalam memerangi terorisme di kawasan itu,” katanya.
Dalam pernyataan lain khusus untuk Al-Jazeera, Kirby mengatakan bahwa Kementerian Pertahanan tetap berkomitmen untuk membantu Arab Saudi dan mitra Teluknya mempertahankan perbatasan mereka sehubungan dengan apa yang disebutnya sebagai ancaman dari Yaman dan lawan lainnya di wilayah tersebut.
Dia menunjukkan bahwa Biden mengumumkan penunjukan diplomat Timothy Lenderking sebagai utusan khusus AS untuk Yaman pada saat Amerika Serikat meningkatkan upaya diplomatiknya untuk mengakhiri perang di sana.
Dia mengatakan bahwa pemerintah AS sedang meninjau cara terbaik untuk mengimplementasikan tujuan yang diumumkan oleh Biden dengan bekerja untuk mengakhiri perang di Yaman dan menghentikan dukungan untuk permusuhan dan penjualan senjata terkait.
Kirby memperjelas bahwa arahan Biden tidak berlaku untuk mendukung operasi kontraterorisme melawan al-Qaeda dan ISIS di Yaman.
Dia mengatakan bahwa tujuan utama Amerika Serikat di Yaman adalah untuk membela warga Amerika dan sekutu serta mitranya melalui operasi kontraterorisme.
Pada hari Kamis, Presiden Biden mengumumkan, dalam pidato kebijakan luar negeri pertamanya, penghentian semua dukungan militer untuk perang di Yaman.
Di markas besar Kementerian Luar Negeri, dia mengatakan bahwa perang ini “harus diakhiri,” tetapi pada saat yang sama menekankan bahwa negaranya akan terus mendukung Arab Saudi “dan membantunya dalam mempertahankan kedaulatan dan tanahnya.”
