Jenderal (purn) John Philip Abizaid, mantan Komandan Pusat Komando Militer Amerika Serikat (CENTCOM) yang mengawasi operasi militer AS di wilayah 27 negara dari ujung Afrika, Semenanjung Arab hingga Asia Tengah dan Selatan resmi menjabat sebagai Duta Besar Amerika Serikat untuk Kerajaan Arab Saudi.
Karir militer Jhon Abizaid sangat cemerlang dan menduduki posisi strategis. Keterlibatannya di berbagai operasi militer di sejumlah negara, termasuk dalam perang Teluk, pada 7 Juli 2003, Abizaid diangkat sebagai Komandan CENTCOM AS yang mengawal sekitar 250,000 pasukan AS di luar AS menggantikan Jenderal Tommy Franka. Pada saat itu, ia naik pangkat menjadi Jenderal penuh berbintang empat.
Menurut laporan Harian Arab Saudi berbahasa Arab, Al Hayat, 3/5/19, Jenderal (purn) Angkatan Darat Amerika Serikat yang lahir 1 April 1951 itu telah tiba di ibukota Riyadh, Kamis (2/5/2019) untuk mengawali tugas diplomatiknya untuk negaranya di bawah pemerintahan Presiden Donald Trump.
Presiden Trump mengajukan Abizaid calon Duta Besar AS untuk Kerajaan Saudi Arabia sejak bulan November 2018, namun baru dikukuhkan Kongres pada 10 April tahun ini. (Fath)
