Menurut al-arabiay.net, Indonesia terus maju dengan rencana untuk memindahkan Ibu Kotanya ke pulau Kalimantan pada paruh pertama tahun 2024, setelah proposal itu ditangguhkan selama beberapa bulan di tengah pandemi.
Draf yang diajukan pada September lalu menunjukkan ekonomi terbesar di Asia Tenggara itu berencana memindahkan Ibu Kota dari Jakarta ke lahan seluas 56.180 hektar di Provinsi Kalimantan Timur.
RUU itu juga menyatakan bahwa Presiden atas persetujuan Parlemen, memutuskan siapa yang akan memerintah Ibu Kota, dan menghapus persyaratan untuk pemilihan yang sering dirusak oleh pertarungan politik yang sengit.
Parlemen diperkirakan akan mengesahkan RUU itu menjadi undang-undang tahun ini, memberikan dasar hukum untuk proyek yang bernilai Rp. 489 triliun setara ($34 miliar) untuk bergerak maju sebelum pemilihan Presiden 2024.
Meski langkah tersebut dapat membantu mengamankan warisan Presiden Joko Widodo di tahun terakhir masa jabatan terakhirnya, langkah tersebut juga telah menimbulkan kekhawatiran lingkungan terkait deforestasi.
Dalam catatan al-arabiaya, Indonesia, yang mengusulkan gagasan itu beberapa dekade lalu, akan menjadi negara Asia Tenggara ketiga yang memindahkan ibu kotanya. Negara tetangga Malaysia memindahkan ibu kota administratifnya ke Putrajaya pada tahun 2003, dan Myanmar mengubah ibu kotanya menjadi Naypyidaw pada tahun 2006.
Widodo, atau lebih dikenal sebagai Jokowi sebagaimana ditulis al-arabiya, mengatakan bahwa pemukiman kembali akan membantu menyebarkan kegiatan ekonomi di luar pulau terpadat di Jawa, mempersempit kesenjangan pendapatan dengan bagian lain negara itu.
Jawa adalah rumah bagi hampir 60% penduduk Indonesia, dan menyumbang lebih dari setengah PDB negara. Kalimantan, bagian Indonesia (Borneo) menyumbang 5,8% dari populasi dan 8,2% dari ekonomi.
