“Hal Ini Sama Sekali Tidak Baik: Perpecahan di Uni Eropa Karena Perang di Israel”
Perpecahan di dalam Uni Eropa akibat perang Israel berpotensi melemahkan kewenangan Presiden Komisi Eropa. Menyusul serangkaian pernyataan membingungkan yang dibuat oleh Ursula von der Leyen, Presiden Komisi Eropa, sebagai tanggapan terhadap konflik di Israel, banyak negara anggota UE dan sesama komisaris telah menyatakan keprihatinan tentang kemampuannya untuk “menjaga ketertiban dalam wilayah kekuasaannya sendiri. ”
Dukungan penuh Von der Leyen terhadap Israel, tanpa dukungan seluruh negara anggota UE, telah menimbulkan pertanyaan. Pekan lalu, para menteri luar negeri Uni Eropa secara kolektif mengutuk tindakan Hamas dan juga mengadvokasi perlindungan warga sipil, pembebasan sandera, dan pengiriman bantuan penting seperti makanan, air, dan obat-obatan ke Jalur Gaza tanpa hambatan, sesuai dengan standar internasional, hukum kemanusiaan.
Von der Leyen secara khusus menahan diri untuk tidak mendesak Israel mematuhi hukum internasional, berbeda dengan banyak pemimpin Uni Eropa, termasuk tokoh-tokoh seperti Josep Borrell dan PBB, yang telah melakukan hal serupa. Absennya Dewan Eropa dalam koordinasi dan partisipasi perjalanan ke Israel menggarisbawahi perpecahan yang ada di UE mengenai sikapnya terhadap konflik Israel-Gaza. Dalam pernyataannya, Charles Michel menekankan pentingnya mematuhi piagam dan nilai-nilai fundamental Uni Eropa. Ia menekankan perlunya membangun posisi bersama yang mencerminkan kompleksitas situasi yang ada.
Seruan untuk persatuan dan kejelasan ini muncul sebagai tanggapan terhadap beragam tanggapan dari lembaga dan pemimpin UE, seperti dukungan Ursula von der Leyen terhadap Israel tanpa persetujuan bulat dan pernyataan Josep Borrell yang menyatakan blokade Israel di Gaza sebagai tindakan ilegal.
