Hal itu disampaikan Pompeo dalam percakapan telepon dengan Perdana Menteri Libanon, Hassan Diab dilansir naharnet.com mengutip AFP.
Pompeo menyuarakan “komitmen teguh kami untuk membantu rakyat Libanon ketika mereka mengatasi dampak dari peristiwa yang mengerikan ini,” kata sebuah pernyataan Departemen Luar Negeri.
“Lebih jauh ia menekankan solidaritas dan dukungan kami bagi rakyat Libanon ketika mereka berusaha untuk mendapat kemakmuran, dan keamanan yang layak mereka dapatkan.”
Pernyataan itu hanya berbicara tentang “ledakan mengerikan” dan tidak menggambarkan penyebabnya, meskipun Selasa (4/8/2020) Presiden Donald Trump bersikeras bahwa itu adalah sebuah serangan.
“Itu semacam bom, ya,” kata Trump kepada wartawan, sembari mengatakan bahwa dia berbicara dengan para jenderal AS tentang ledakan itu.
Para pejabat Libanon belum menggambarkan ledakan yang menewaskan lebih dari 100 orang itu sebagai serangan. Sementara itu, Perdana Menteri Diab menyalahkan adanya penyimpanan sejumlah besar bahan peledak di gudang di sisi kiri.
Pompeo tidak menjelaskan bagaimana Amerika Serikat akan membantu Libanon, yang sudah berada dalam krisis ekonomi yang dalam dan mencari lebih dari $ 20 miliar dalam pendanaan eksternal.
